Over the last 2 years we have been working in partnership with Coca-Cola to improve the health of the River Nar, in the Norfolk countryside, which is a site of special scientific interest, and in the healthiest stretches, is home to otters, water voles, trout and kingfishers. Please watch the video by clicking on the photo on the left.

The first river restoration project working with this partnership was at Mileham, which was completed in October 2012. The new sinuous channel travels through Mileham Common and into a meadow on a neighbouring farm. The highs and lows of the land change the depth and width of the river channel, this gives the new floodplain new habitat niches with varying wetness. These areas will give different species of flora and fauna unique habitats to thrive.

To find out what species were present on the site before works took place pre-river restoration monitoring was done. We monitored water quality (dissolved oxygen, water flow, conductivity, turbidity, water temperature and pH), invertebrates, water voles, other small mammals, macrophytes, terrestrial vegetation and fish.

Please see the attached document to the right of this page for more information and the results of the monitoring. We have also had post-river restoration monitoring for this project to find out what has changed and how the habitat has established. This document will be ready very soon.
