Project summary
On the existing Ordnance Survey maps the River Pant shows a distinct but small meander. Restoring this meander is not feasible due to the level of excavation required and the highly modified nature of the river.
However, there is potential to create a small back channel in this area to enhance conditions for macrophytes and provide a refuge for fish in high flow events. To create this back channel requires limited excavation for a quick and substantial gain.
There is also the chance to rehabilitate and improve the overall hydrological and morphological conditions by reprofiling a section of river and creating some berms. Finally, we will introduce some woody debris into the river to create pools and riffles which will improve the overall biodiversity of the river.
We will also restore 60m and plant a further 100m of hedgerows to improve connectivity with the landscape and restore floodplain meadow by planting an appropriate seed mix.
Monitoring surveys and results
Fixed point photography will be used to assess vegetation changes and changes in river peformance.
