Help:User guide/User accounts
This part of the user guide describes how to create an account, how to log in, and how to change your preferences.
Create an account
You can create a user account via the log-in page; or click the following link to go directly to the sign up page.
You'll need to specify a user name and a password, and you'll also need to enter your email address. After creating your account, a confirmation email will be sent to this email address. The confirmation email contains a link that you can click to complete your registration. You won't be able to create case studies or edit any other content until you've completed this final step.
Passwords
Passwords must be at least 6 characters long, but longer passwords will be more secure. Avoid using a dictionary word or a name as your password. Ideally, passwords should be 8 or more characters long and contain a mixture of upper and lower case letters, numbers and punctuation marks or other symbols.
To log in to the wiki, click the Log in / create account link at the top right of the page, and enter your user name and password.
If you have difficulty in logging in please contacts us.
Forgotten password
If you've forgotten your password, you can reset it from the Special:PasswordReset page. Enter your user name, and an email will be sent to you with further instructions for resetting your password. If you don't know your user name, or you can't receive the password reset email because the email address associated with your user account is no longer valid, then you'll need to create a new account.
Changing preferences
Select a country-specific home page
You can choose to see a page for your country instead of the default main page when you visit the wiki. To do this, first log in, then click your user name at the top of the page. This will display your user page, which should contain a Configure a country-specific main page link. This link will take you to a form where you can select a country to be displayed as your default home page (or you can select blank if you want to revert to using the normal main page).
You can also enter other content you want to be displayed on your main page - for example, links to pages you use frequently. This content will be displayed below the country-specific content. See Help:Editing for information about how to format this content.
Wiki preferences
To edit your wiki preferences, after logging in, click the My preferences link at the top of the page. There are numerous options for customising your wiki experience, and full details about them can be found on the MediaWiki web site. The most useful ones are on the User Profile tab:
- Language: you can choose an alternative language to use for the wiki user interface. However the common language of the RESTORE wiki is English, and you will find that most content is still presented in English.
- E-mail: if you want to use a different email address then it can be specified here. You can also choose whether you want to be emailed when a page on your watchlist is changed (by default this option is turned on).
