Project summary
The Overijssels kanaal, Marswetering and Beentjesgraven are three roughly parallel waterways that discharge into the river IJssel. The water authority Drents Overijsselse Delta created more structural variation in these streams to improve their ecological quality and meet WFD criteria. The banks were divided into a green and a blue zone. In the blue zone, vegetation was regularly removed to ensure flow continuity. In the green zone, vegetation is removed less regulaly and in a way that contributes to a varied flow structure. In the Overijssels kanaal, reed is removed in the summer months. In the Marswetering, further efforts are planned to broaden the waterway and recreate meanders. Fish passages have been created in the Overijssels kanaal and Marswetering.
Monitoring surveys and results
Vegetation development is monitored by FLORON. In the Overijssel kanaal, reed removal has created opportunities for the development of calamus and yellow iris. The overall ecological quality ratios of the three streams have improved.
Macrofauna are monitored at 3-4 locations per stream.
