Project summary

Edit project overview to modify the project summary.

The project aimed to improve the natural value of the Riopudio stream and its surroundings, in order to constitute an environmental reference in articulating the region of Aljarafe, promoting its public use by citizens of the region. The preliminary work consisted in the elimination of the shrub vegetation in order to allow the execution the new profiles and avoid, as far as possible, the subsequent invasion of some very colonizing species. The design of the conditioning of the riverbed has been adapted to the natural conformation of the stream with slopes to avoid erosion and facilitate its subsequent revegetation. In addition, breakwater and dyke structures were installed in order to guarantee the structural stability of the riverbed, helping its stabilisation and thus reducing erosion. When it comes to restoring the vegetation cover of the Riopudio stream, previous action has been taken on the existing one, eliminating invasive species and weeds by clearing them, while preserving and improving the aerial structure of those specimens and copses that are within the areas to be revegetated and which, due to their ecological value, shall be to maintained. The public footpaths have been built along the two margins, creating accesible pedestrians walkways, and allowing the development of educational activities. They will be accesible on foot or by bicycle and, exceptionally, by authorised motorised vehicles for the maintenance of the area. Thirteen wooden footbridges have also been installed. Appart from this, five recreation areas for rest and lesure have been built.

Reasons for river restoration

Mitigation of a pressure
Hydromorphology To improve the natural value of the Riopudio stream and its surroundings, in order to constitute an environmental reference in articulating the region of Aljarafe.
Biology
Physico-chemical
Other reasons for the project To promote the area’s orderly public use by citizens of the region.

Measures

Structural measures
Bank/bed modifications - Preliminary works Consisted of the elimination of shrub vegetation along the stream area, speacilly the abundant of two currently invasive plants (Arundo donax and Ricinus communis) as well as tall ruderal scrubs. This action allowed the execution of the new planned stream profiles, and also the avoidance, as far as possible, of subsequent invasion of these very colonising species. - Land movement The design of the conditioning of the riverbed has been adapted to the natural conformation of the stream with slopes to avoid erosion and facilitate its subsequent revegetation. - Defense of the riverbanks In the sections of the riverbed in which fluvial erosion has occurred due to its instability due mainly to the characteristics of the materials of the slope, its geometry and the extraordinary conditions of circulation of the flow in periods of high rainfall, the breakwater structures foreseen in the project have been placed in order to guarantee the structural stability and the collapses to the riverbed. In other sections where significant tangential stresses occur due to existing steep longitudinal slopes, a total of ten dams have been constructed to help stabilise the river bed and thus reduce erosion. The first two upstream are made of concrete breakwater, as they are smaller, while the remaining eight are made of mass concrete and are spread over sections where the slope of the stream is steeper. - Landscaping and cleaning of the area Prior to the environmental restoration of the land, rubble removal has been carried out in expropriated areas due to the existence of abandoned houses and uncontrolled dumping. Subsequently, the existing woodland was cleaned and felled, the olive grove plots remaining in the expropriated areas were pruned and regrinded, all the created waste was chipped and the pre-existing shrub vegetation was rubbed mechanically. - Environmental restoration (Plantations and maintenance) When it comes to restoring the vegetation cover of the Riopudio stream, previous action has been taken on the existing one, eliminating invasive species and weeds by clearing them, while preserving and improving the aerial structure of those specimens and copses that are within the areas to be revegetated and which, due to their ecological value, shall be to maintained. In order to ensure the rooting of the introduced plantations, numerous maintenance irrigations were carried out between April and the end of November due to the high average temperatures that occurred during the spring, summer and autumn of 2015, as well as the necessary weeding and clearing on the invasive plants that competed with the implanted vegetation. These clearings were also important in thr presention of forest fires. Other complementary measures have been the construction of Canadian crossings to prevent the entry of livestock and the enclosure with livestock mesh that protects the planted area and physically delimits it.

Social measures (incl. engagement) - Wooden footbridges Thirteen wooden footbridges have been built, four of which cross the river from margin to margin and the other nine for crossing small tributaries that flow into the stream. The footbridges are supported by reinforced concrete abutments founded on foundation wells adjacent to the riverbed, which are later protected with a breakwater. - Public footpaths The public footpaths have been built along the two margins, with a total length of 34, 084 m and an average width of 3 m, creating accesible pedestrians walkways, and allowing the development of educational activities. They will be accesible on foot or by bicycle and, exceptionally, by authorised motorised vehicles for the maintenance of the area. Thirteen wooden footbridges have also been installed. Appart from this, five recreation areas for rest and lesure have been built. In order to prevent these trails from being used by unauthorised motorised vehicles, a series of control barriers have been installed: threestaggered bollards, placed with a separation of 1 m. Water passages were also included, dimensioned according to hydrological calculations and provided with their corresponding mouths, chambers and ancillary works, to allow drainage of the footpaths to the Riopudio when rainfall is intense. - Recreation areas for rest and lesure Five recreation areas for rest and lesure have been built. They enable visitors to enjoy this area where the the restored ecosystems along the entire length of the stream are present. These areas are equipped with parking areas next to public pathways access, rest areas with urban furniture, trees that allow activities in the shade, containers, rustic bicycle parking and interpretive posters.
