Phytoplankton

Phytoplankton refers to unicellular algae and cyanobacteria, both solitary and colonial, that live, at least for part of their lifecycle, in the water column of surface water bodies. Common parameters used for characterization are species composition and abundance, bloom characteristics, and biomass.
