Benthic invertebrates are animals living at least for part of their life cycles on or in the benthic substrates of rivers, lakes, transitional waters (estuaries) or coastal waters. Common parameters used for characterization are species composition and abundance, ratio of disturbance sensitive to insensitive taxa, and diversity.
