Project summary

Edit project overview to modify the project summary.

The River Rolfsån in South West Sweden was restored for sea trout, rare lake trout, salmon and river pearl mussel. The river has been classified as extremely valuable by its natural characteristics which were deteriorated by two water power plants built in 1940's and 1950's. Because of the power plants the fish were completely unable to migrate between the sea and river. The watercourse continues upstream where there are five lakes and two other rivers with more hydro power plants. There have also been restorations in the other two rivers including dam removals, building fish passages, habitat restorations and rising the minimum flow of the rivers (by buying water). In 2009 a fish passage was built to the Myrekulla kvarn mill after which the migrants have been able to rise upstream.

The project was managed and mostly financed by the Länsstyrelse/Västra Götaland (regional environmental authority). The rest of the financing has been organized by the national environmental institute, Naturvårdsvärket, who is responsible for targeting the money collected from the hydro power companies to the watercourses which have been deteriorated by hydro power production.
