Al vanaf de Middeleeuwen werkt de mens aan de Berkel. Eerst om hem bevaarbaar te maken en te houdenen vanaf de jaren dertig om overstromingen te verminderen. De Berkel is hierdoor in de loop der jaren veranderd in een rechte eentonige rivier. Nu voegen we weer een stuk verloren gegane natuur toe. Hierdoor kunnen veel meer soorten planten en dieren in en langs de Berkel leven. Bovendien wordt het water schoner.
The measures that will be taken are:
- remeandering and introduction of woody debris to create more variety in stream flow, water depth and plant growth;
- cascading fish passages will be made on the Besselink and Warken dams;
- land consolidation, to move production lands away from the low lying (thus wet) river banks, and closer to the farms, thus reducing distance travelled by farmers;
- a swimming pool and a walking path will be made, in order to better facilitate recreation.
