|Project summary=The EU Directive on the assessment and management of flood risks (2007/60/EC) presents a new approach to tackle flood risk management, based primarily on the prevention, protection, and preparedness, with the promotion of measures for river restoration, prediction of floods, civil protection or land management. This represents a shift over the traditional, structural approach, to the principle of avoiding unneccessary deterioration of river ecosystems, as set out in the Water Framework Directive. The project on the river Órbigo responds to these premises. Project summary
The EU Directive on the assessment and management of flood risks (2007/60/EC) presents a new approach to tackle flood risk management, based primarily on the prevention, protection, and preparedness, with the promotion of measures for river restoration, prediction of floods, civil protection or land management. This represents a shift over the traditional, structural approach, to the principle of avoiding unneccessary deterioration of river ecosystems, as set out in the Water Framework Directive. The project on the river Órbigo responds to these premises. The actions have been aimed at the recovery of the river area and of the functionality of the floodplain to increase the efficiency in the dissipation of floods, and to start the self-ecological recovery by connecting the river with related riparian areas.
The project was one of the IRF European Riverprize finalists in 2013.
