|Project summary=Vindel River LIFE is a collaborative project between Umeå University, Vindel River Fishery Advisory Board, and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. The aim of the project is to reduce the effects of fragmentation and channelization in the Vindel River catchment by removing former timber-floating installations. Restoration of 22 tributaries along a total river stretch of 44 km during 2010 – 2015 means that 73 % of the former installations will be removed. The objective of the project is to achieve a good water status in the river and an increased conservation status for the species in the area.

The Vindel river provides a unique habitat for a variety of aquatic species and many of them are listed as protected species. Otter, great diving beetle, bullhead, Atlantic Salmon, Salmon Trutta and freshwater pearl mussel are all present in the stream.  
The length of the restored area is 4500 meters. During the restoration banks have been modified, closed channels re-opened, spawning grounds constructed and building fishways have been taken away to improve the habitats for migratory fish. Flow velocity has been monitored throughout the restoration project. Also fish abundance has been monitored before and after the restoration.
 
Remediation of Migratory Barriers in streams (ReMiBar) -project is related to the Vindel River LIFE. (http://www.trafikverket.se/PageFiles/91694/remibar_remediation_of_migratory_barriers_in_streams.pdf) In Västerbotten, measures are planned for 75 culverts in the river Sävarån. 66 culverts within the river Lögdeälven will be fixed. In Västerbotten 31 dams will be removed. Otter passages will be
constructed underneath a nummer of bridges. In total, the project will improve migration routes for fish and other animals at 304 locations in the counties of Norrbotten and Västerbotten.
