De Doorbraak is part of a plan to improve the ecological status of the river Regge. It contributes to a separation of urban and rural waters, so that less polluted water ends up in the Regge. The topsoil of this stream valley was removed over a length of 13 km and a width of 50 m. This created a large area that the stream can inundate. Abandoned meanders and pools were conncted to the main stream. Vegetation removal is managed by grazers, with additonal mowing, if necessary.
