Project summary
The main objective of the project LIFE + SEGURA RIVERLINK is to improve connectivity between natural ecosystems through a series of actions aimed at restoring the river and recovering its function as a green corridor. This approach will reinforce the implementation of the Water Framework Directive in the Segura Basin and the results obtained will be transferred to the rest of the basin through the Hydrological Plan of the Segura Basin.
The use of a new concept in land management and planning, the green infrastructure approach, is the solution to reverse landscape fragmentation by connecting natural areas. This improves ecosystems health and resilience, increases biodiversity and benefits human populations by improving ecosystem services.
The project improves and strengthens fluvial connectivity by removing an unused weir and building eight fish passages. All these actions are accompanied by the ecological restoration of riverbanks.
The specific objectives of the project are the following:
• Recover the longitudinal continuity and permeability of the Segura and Benamor rivers in these catchment sections, thereby encouraging the restoration of their natural dynamics and increasing the mobility of the species along both rivers.
• Reverse fragmentation processes by returning the river and its riverbank to its function as ecological corridors and connectivity between protected areas within this location.
• Increase biodiversity through the existence and accessibility to a sufficient number of habitats for the feeding and reproduction of species associated with the river thus improving the resilience of the ecosystem against disturbances of natural or anthropogenic origin.
• Improve the ecological status of water bodies.
• Develop a Land Stewardship Network to involve private owners in the management of the river, increasing ties between the river and the adjacent territories.
• Increase social involvement in the management of the Segura River.
• Increase social awareness of the problems in aquatic and riparian ecosystems.
• Integrate the green infrastructure approach and the validated tools in the project into the Hydrological Plan of the Segura Basin.
The project also has a Volunteer Program and an Environmental Education Campaign to raise public awareness on the importance of preserving our river ecosystems and will promote its active participation.
Monitoring surveys and results
In order to validate these actions and evaluate the results, the project carried out a comprehensive monitoring program including biological, physical-chemical and hydromorphological indicators. This facilitated the subsequent transfer to the rest of the basin and other rivers with similar problems.
