Het bovenloopse deel van de Hierdensebeek heet de Leuvenumse beek, waar de bouwen met natuur werkzaamheden zijn uitgevoerd. De totale lengte van de hoofdloop (bovenloop + benedenloop) van de Hierdense beek is ongeveer 17 km. Sinds 1993 zijn hier werkzaamheden uitgevoerd om de ruimtelijke ordening, water kwaliteit en ecologie te verbeteren door het aantakken van de oude meander. In 1996/1997 is er een grote onderhoudsbeurt geweest aan de beek. De eerste Bouwen met Natuur werkzaamheden met dood hout zijn begonnen in 2011 en duurden tot 2013. Het gebruikte hout is afkomstig uit het bos direct rond de beek en is ingebracht als vlechtwerken om het water zo goed mogelijk erlangs te laten stromen. Behalve het gebruik van dood hout, is in 2014 het "Synergy-project" begonnen waar verschillende BmN maatregelen gecombineerd worden, zoals beschaduwen, maaibeheer en zandsuppletie. De universiteit van Amsterdam heeft onderzoek uitgevoerd om de invloed van het ingebrachte hout op de flora en fauna te onderzoeken. Dit experiment wordt uitgevoerd in het kader van het innovatieprogramma 'Beekdalbreed hermeanderen' van de Europese Kaderrichtlijn Water. Binnen deze richtlijn werken water- en natuurbeheerders samen om beekherstelmaatregelen zo efficient mogelijk te maken. Andere projectpartners betrokken projectpartners zijn Natuurmonumenten, Landschap Overijssel, Wageningen Unversiteit, onderzoeks instituut Alterra en de Universiteit Utrecht. Het programma is aanvakelijk geïnitieerd door Stichting Toegepast Onderzoek Waterbeheer (STOWA) en het Ministerie van Infrastructuur en Milieu subsidieert 70% van dit project.
